What to expect

Are you looking for a unique winter activity? How about a winter kayak tour in Stockholm? The city centre offers all-year-around kayak conditions. We run trips as long as the water temperature on Lake Mälaren remains positive.

We provide all the needed equipment. Most importantly, safety is our highest priority. Therefore, we run all our tours in dry suits. In case of a worst-case event, you will stay dry and safe.

Paddle your way through the heart of the city and enjoy spectacular views. Winter kayaking offers perfect conditions, as we have the waters for ourselves. We use tandem kayaks (more stable) by default. However, we can provide single kayaks (previous experience needed) on request. The tour takes you along the beautiful and historic neighbourhoods of Kungsholmen, Langholmen Södermalm, Gamla Stan and Lila Essingen. You'll paddle under charming bridges and through peaceful waterways.

Our experienced kayak guide will provide insights into the city's history and culture. As well as tips on the best spots for photos and sightseeing.

CUSTOMER FAQ
Winter Kajaktour Stockholm City

1. What weather can I expect?

The winter season offers a unique and serene experience on the water. During this time, temperatures usually range from -10°C to 10°C. While it can be cold, the calmness and beauty of Stockholm in winter make it well worth it. As we say in Sweden, "there is no bad weather, only wrong clothing." To ensure a comfortable experience, check the weather forecast close to your tour date and bring appropriate winter clothing, including thermal layers, a waterproof outer layer, and warm accessories like gloves and hats. Winter kayaking has unique advantages: the water is usually less wavy, and almost no boats are operating, making for a tranquil experience. We also sometimes paddle partially through ice and snow, adding to the special experience.

2. What clothing should I bring?

For winter kayaking, we recommend wearing warm, comfortable clothing that can be layered under a dry suit. While we provide dry suits to keep you safe, it's important to dress appropriately for the cold weather. Be sure to check the weather before you pack and adjust your clothing accordingly. What to Bring: - Warm thermal underwear (merino) - Hiking pants and a warm fleece - 2 pairs of warm wool socks - 1 warm winter hat - A change of clothes - Large cotton towel for Sauna Please make sure to bring some spare clothing with you to wear after the kayak tour.

3. Where can I leave my luggage?

We have no dedicated storage space for larger luggage (suitcases e.g. ). However, you can take smaller backpacks (daypacks) directly with you into the kayak (dry compartment). Otherwise, we recommend to use one of the dedicated luggage box providers in Stockholm. Recommendation: Luggage Hero T-Centralen https://lughero.com/StockholmNatureActivities Any luggage that you chose to leave at the kayak station is not in our responsibility.

4. What facilities are on spot?

We offer dry bag rentals for a small surcharge to keep your belongings safe during your trip. Please note that there are no toilet facilities at the kayak station. We recommend preparing accordingly before you arrive to ensure a comfortable and enjoyable experience. Additionally, we offer on certain days as well our Sauna Experience on spot, which comes with the opportunity to jump in-between into the cold water.

5. What fitness level is required?

This city kayak trip covers approximately 8-10 km, making it a light to medium-light sport activity. Almost all of our customers have no trouble with the distance and required fitness, as we maintain a slow pace compared to other companies that rush a similar distance in just two hours. Therefore, there's nothing to worry about when booking with us. You just need to be in normal health and bring the right mindset. Our guides will assist you along the way, but individual help depends on the final group size on the day. We always ensure that everyone gets the best possible experience and even tow other kayaks if there are any problems. However, for some customers, it can be a demanding exercise that they will feel in their arms after the activity. At the end of the day, it also depends on the weather conditions, such as wind.

6. How likely is it to tip over?

The likelihood of tipping over during our winter kayak trip is very low. Our kayaks are designed to be stable and suitable for both beginners and experienced paddlers, and the calm winter waters of our route further minimize the risk. We provide a thorough briefing before the trip, covering essential paddling techniques and safety measures. Our guides are also on hand to assist and ensure everyone feels confident and secure throughout the journey. While it's natural to have some concerns, rest assured that tipping over is a rare occurrence. Should it happen, our guides are trained to handle such situations quickly and effectively, ensuring your safety at all times. Double kayaks almost never tip over; it's more likely to happen in single kayaks. Therefore, if you're not an experienced kayaker, please choose a double kayak during the booking process. Even in the event of tipping over, you will stay safe, as we only kayak in suitable drysuits during the winter season.

7. What type of kayak will I be using?

When deciding whether to use a single or tandem kayak, consider your experience level and what you're looking for in your kayak tour Stockholm adventure. We typically provide tandem kayaks by default, as they cater well to various skill levels and promote a shared experience. Tandem kayaks are particularly suitable for beginners or those who prefer the company and added stability that comes with a two-person setup. Additionally, all our kayaks are Sea-Kayaks equipped with a rudder, enhancing steering and control, making them ideal for navigating our coastal waters. If you have a preference for a single kayak, please let us know in advance so we can accommodate your request. This allows us to ensure that everyone has the best possible experience on the water, tailored to their skills and comfort level.

8. What is the minimum age?

For winter kayaking, due to safety reasons and equipment limitations (dry suits), we require a minimum age of 16 years. This ensures that we can provide the safest and most enjoyable experience for all participants. For those over 16 years, you are welcome to join our winter kayak trips as long as you are accompanied by an adult. We recommend double kayaks for families, as they provide extra stability and allow an adult to paddle with a younger participant. Our guides will provide special instructions and assistance to ensure everyone's safety and enjoyment throughout the journey. Life jackets and drysuits are available in various sizes and we take extra care to make sure everyone is comfortable and secure.
